Have your eye pressure taken by the glaucoma specialists
Tonometry is the scientific term for having your eye pressure taken. By measuring the (intraocular) pressure in your eye, Tonometry can provide accurate results concerning your eye health. The process is predominantly used to test for glaucoma.
Glaucoma can cause blindness if it isn’t diagnosed and treated as soon as possible; it damages the (optic) nerve in the back of your eye. One of the first signs of glaucoma is high eye pressure.
At Alton Eye Care we specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. We use a non-contact tonometer and a visual field analyser, as well as digital photography to assess the risk of developing glaucoma.
The pressure of your eye is measured by how much force is needed to flatten your cornea. The process is extremely accurate. It can also provide the optician with important information regarding the health of your eyes, there and then.
You’re at a higher risk of developing glaucoma if:
- You’re over 60
- You smoke
- You have a family member who has glaucoma
- You use steroids
- You’re Asian/Hispanic/African American
- You’ve suffered an injury to your eye recently or in the past
If you would like more information regarding glaucoma, or you would like to have your eye pressure tested, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Our optician is fully qualified to carry out the above procedure and can answer any questions you may have regarding Tonometry.
